Google mashups -v- Yahoo Pipes. Google wins for the moment

A few weeks ago I had a post entitled Yahoo pipes – after the hype. I stated my disappointment at a fabulous idea. Why? Because I want to create Paul Radamachers amazing housing maps in five minutes. After all 'nix OS's can create great pipes in minutes. We need to get over the rocket science stage. I hoped Yahoo Pipes would be the answer. It is a tiny part of the puzzle, one pipe and not an app to pipe all sorts of stuff together (I am talking outside just rss).

eureka, we have the five minute housing map (which is not as cool as the original, but it is a start). OK let's do it. A housing map of San Francisco

  • Grab the RSS feed for http://sfbay.craigslist.org/apa/, which is http://sfbay.craigslist.org/apa/index.rss
  • Add it to http://ws.geonames.org/rssToGeoRSS?feedUrl=
  • The result is http://ws.geonames.org/rssToGeoRSS?feedUrl=http://sfbay.craigslist.org/apa/index.rss which you then paste into the search bar of google maps.
  • This is the result (which I have zoomed in a bit). It is not brilliant but it is a result and in less than 5 minutes. Now the next extra mile. Idea's anyone?
